Following are frequently asked questions about the RPI. Click the title of the question to see the response.
The Rating Percentage Index is a statistical system used to comparatively rank teams. This transparent system allows anyone to calculate the formula. The RPI will be used to both award at-large berths and to seed teams for both the 3A and 4A state tournaments.
The formula is: RPI = (30% x MWP) + (40% x OWP) + (30% x OOWP)
• MWP (Modified Winning Percentage): The teams winning percentage versus all other 3A and 4A varsity teams. To calculate: Divide the number of games won (against varsity level 3A and 4A teams) by total number games played (against varsity level 3A and 4A teams).
• OWP (Opponents Winning Percentage): Average of the MWP of a team’s opponents. *
(Note: The OWP is not calculated via the combined record of the opponents, but rather by averaging the winning percentage of the opponents).
• OOWP (Opponents’ Opponents Winning Percentage: Same process as OWP except the calculation is with the opponents of the team’s opponent.*
* when calculating OWP and OOWP, the head-to-head matchup between teams is taken out of the equation.
All 3A & 4A varsity games against all other 3A and 4A varsity teams are used in the RPI. Games which are NOT included in the RPI are results against 1A, 2A, sub-varsity, and out-of-state teams. For example: If a 3A varsity team plays a 4A JV team, that result would not factor into the RPI.
There are several advantages to using the RPI. Because the rankings can be seen during the regular season, schools will have better sense of their chances for a higher seed or an at-large selection sooner in the process. This will also help ensure all games are correctly entered throughout the season. Additionally, the RPI has the third layer, OOWP, which the previous WPI system did not calculate.
The official ASAA RPI standings will be updated every hour on ASAA365.com. This update will occur on the half-hour. It is worth noting that any RPI data published elsewhere is unofficial and could be incorrect.
School teams should be inputting their schedule and scores into MaxPreps. The official RPI feed will be calculated based on the results entered into MaxPreps by the school coaching/admin staff. Contact ASAA for assistance on entering scores.
The RPI is based on a win-loss records. Score differential will have no bearing on the RPI.
The RPI formula works off the averages of three components: modified winning percentage, opponents’ winning percentage and opponents’ opponents winning percentage, so an imbalance of games between two teams will have virtually no impact on the ranking system.
The final RPI calculations used for at-large and seeding purposes will be based on the final records of all teams. This will include games played during the conference tournament. However, a committee will review the seeds to possibly change the seeds to avoid conference opponents playing each other in the first round.
OWP is the average winning percentages of a team’s opponents. (Note: This is not calculated via the combined record of the opponents, but rather averaging each winning percentage of the opponents.) It is also important to remember that when calculating OWP (and OOWP), the head-to-head matchup between teams is taken out of the equation. That game already is figured in both teams’ WP. The rationale for omitting this result is so there is not a double increase or a double decrease for a specific game. Doing so gives an accurate assessment of how teams rate when they are not playing each other.
Yes, all games played thru the conference championship tournaments will be included.
Yes, all games, including endowments are included in the RPI.
The at-large selection will be solely based on the final RPI results. In the February ASAA Board of Directors meeting they voted for the 2022-2023 basketball season to use the RPI to seed without any committee looking to possibly change seeds to avoid conference opponents playing each other in the first round. In the April 2023 the ASAA Board of Directors will review this and see if they would like to possibly use a committee again.
